Magnum Professional Practice / Little Papers

Little Papers 2012-2015

Winner of Magnum Showcase  2013 : Memory

The on going series “Little Papers” presents a collection of small paper objects (wrapping paper, paper bags, paper receipts, paper napkins, etc.) Photographed digitally in color on white plane backgrounds. I have always been very attracted to paper in general, the way it looks, how the texture feels and most of all, the fragility of its material. Gradually, I have been collecting different kind of papers; each of them represents other a particular place, moment, action, person, etc. They are memories shaped on an ephemeral material destined to vanish. By photographing them, I infuse to the objects a new tangibility; The “Papers” reincarnate within a new kind of paper, the photographic one. Thereby, this process of redundancy draw importance to the object, by sustaining a new extends to its existence. Along with each photograph, the captions (sometime a word or a whole phrase taken out of all contexts) reveal another portion, an additional clue, to the hypothetical story partly concealed. The system involving “image + caption” functions like a montage, implying a strong notion of fiction within the whole series. The viewer is challenged in front of the work to believe or not in the implied document/story.
